My name is Kelli Green. I am a writer,author,future teacher that also loves singing and acting. I was born in Chicago, IL but mostly raised in Pensacola, FL. I am a history major at the University of West Florida.

Below is a poem I wrote about myself entitled, “From Windy to Sunshine” inspired by, “Where I’m From” written by George Ellen Lyon.

I am from snowflakes and electrified subway tracks.

I am from seeing the Sears Tower from the station while shaking hands with Obama.

I am from cold pops, Jay’s potato chips, and deep dish pizza.

I am from hurricanes, oranges, and heat, with promises of Disney World.

I am from Christmas evenings on the beach.

I am from hot combs, rubber bands, and beads.

I am from civil rights movies and Godfather collections where you have to switch out the VHS tape in the middle.

I’m from shiny shoes with hard bottoms and bloody ruffled ankle socks.

I am from a name tag with the “y” scratched out at the end of my name, replaced with a roughly scribbled “i”.

I’m from, “the body of Christ, broken for you.” & “the blood of Christ, shed for you.”

I am from “Say it loud, I’m Black & I’m Proud.” & “I Have a Dream.”

I am from “excuses are tools of incompetence…” & “It’s nice to be important, but it’s more important to be nice.”

I am from Motown hits, the 1960s & 70’s Gold CD collections with a side of Slim Shady.

I’m from, “I was Country When Country Wasn’t Cool” & “I Write Sins Not Tragedies.”

I am from Fried Green Tomatoes by Fannie Flagg, inspiring me to love and to write.

I am from Viola Liuzzo button pinned to my shirt and the words, “It’s Everybody’s Fight” reminding me to stand up for what’s right.

I am from, “A spoon full of Sugar” and “Ease on Down the Road.”

I am from a copy of Grease playing above my hospital bed.

I am from music all day: cassette tapes, CDs, records, and iPod shuffles.

I am from razor scooters and Bluford High books.

I am from a mother who named me Kelli to go with the last name Green.
